Can you take pistons out from the bottom?

You remove the pistons out the bottom, and replace them from the top. So yes you could pull them from the bottom, but you would have to have the head off to properly put them back in. on a geometric cylinder, the process you just described would work on either side.

Remove the Piston from the Cylinder Block by pushing it upwards and out using the Connecting Rod. As shown below. Do not allow the connecting rod to scratch the crankpin journal.

Do pistons come out the top or bottom?

The vast majority of engines have pistons assembled from the top and the conrod diammeter at the big end is smaller than the bore and so will fit down the bore with a ring compressor over the rings to aid entry of the piston to the bore.

Can I remove crankshaft without removing pistons?

Although crankshafts are traditionally removed after the engine has been pulled from the engine bay, it is possible to remove the crankshaft without pulling the engine.

Can I change pistons without removing engine?

In most engines, yes. It depends mainly on how the engine is mounted in the vehicle chassis. If the oil pan will come off, then the rod caps can be removed and the pistons can be removed from the top of the engine block.

Can I just replace piston rings?

If the engine is in good shape but has overheated, and the oil control rings have lost their tension so the engine is burning oil, then yes this is OK to replace the rings. But you must check the cylinders for wear and rebore with new oversize pistons and rings if excessive wear is present.
