Does an HEI distributor have points?

The HEI distributor is still an inductive-discharge ignition, but exchanges points for an electronic device called a module. Since this system produces more voltage and amperage output than a point-type ignition, it requires a larger-diameter cap to prevent voltage crossfire inside the distributor cap.

Where does tach wire go on coil?

The most common locations for a tach signal are the negative terminal of the ignition coil or tachometer output terminal (HEI, Ignition Control Boxes or ECU).

How do you test a HEI distributor?

Use a volt meter to test the hot wire while a buddy cranks the engine over. If the voltage drops below 10.5, check your battery. If the battery is fine, make sure the wire feeding the distributor is sufficient.

How do you hook up a tachometer to a coil pack?

Locate an opening with a rubber grommet installed through which the wire can pass. Route the wire, so that it does not chafe against metal and short. Attach the wire to the negative side of the engine ignition coil. Crimp a connector that will fit onto the coil terminal, and secure it, tightly, with a wrench.

How does a tachometer filter work?

A tachometer filter transforms poor, weak or disordered pulse signals and corrects them by stripping out leading or trailing pulse signal interference. This interference often confuses aftermarket instruments and causes them to act defective or erratic.

How do you adjust the vacuum advance on a HEI distributor?

You can easily adjust the vacuum advance of the Street Fire Distributor. Insert a 3/32" Allen wrench in the canister inlet and turn the adjustment screw clockwise until it is all the way in (Figure 2). Counter clockwise reduces the advance, clockwise increases.

How many wires go to a HEI distributor?

Connect the primary wires to the HEI distributor, via a plug that snaps into the distributor cap. There are two wires in the plug: the hot wire and the tachometer wire. If you are updating from an old distributor, splice the old distributor hot wire to the hot wire of the HEI primary plug.
