Insert the dipstick into the tube slowly and push it all the way down. Now withdraw it and look closely at the tip, which should have oil on it. If the level of the oil is between the two lines, your vehicle has enough oil. If it's at the low mark or below, it's time to add a quart.

If you are new to changing your oil though, use a torque wrench and the proper factory torque specs. It's easy to over-tighten a bolt and strip the threads if you don't have practice. You might also need ramps or a floor jack, jack stands, and wheel chocks if you have to go under the vehicle.

On most models, the dipstick is located on the left side of the engine. The dipstick usually has a yellow or orange circular handle that is clearly visible. When you pull this handle, a long piece of metal will slide out of the engine.

Should you check oil hot or cold?

If checking the oil yourself, make sure the car is parked on level ground and, with most cars, the engine is cold, so you don't burn yourself on a hot engine part. (With some cars, the automaker recommends that the oil be checked after the engine has been warmed up.)

As noted above, the dipstick should be inserted only one way. This puts the F an L markings "on top". The dipstick handle should be oriented toward the front. (See the Owners Manual for diagrams.)
